Studying cardiac function, metabolism, remodeling, and survival in circadian time:

The Many Roles of RCAN1

1. Regulation of calcineurin by RCAN1

Heart failure is the primary cause of death in developed countries and its prevalence is growing world wide.  Research in the Rothermel laboratory focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms that control cardiac structure and function during normal development and in response to pathological stress.  Currently there are four primary lines of investigation, in all of which the gene Regulator of calcineurin 1 (RCAN1) plays a central role.

2. Circadian regulation of cardiac function

3. RCAN1 in adipocyte differentiation and metabolism

4. Mitophagy in cardiac disease and aging
